Photography is a great enabler

Travel photography creates a sense of wanderlust in those who view an image. In some respects it’s an easy win to photograph the exotic. It is more gratifying and difficult to find awe in the ordinary that you know.

Diego Luna states: "The secret of my best work is that it is local”.

I took this idea literally. I chose a project that was limited to photographing only the creatures that inhabited my suburban back yard in the North West suburbs of Melbourne in 2017/2018. Most of the critters I found and became enamoured with were almost imperceptible to the eye. This moth was sitting on my fence paling and was no bigger than my pinky finger nail.

How extraordinary and exquisite life is when we take the time to look deeply and feel deeply. Photography is a great enabler. It gives us a ticket to look, to lose ourselves and capture something of the sublime. Even when it is in your own backyard.
