Self Portrait

Having a portrait made of myself is a strange experience. As a photographer I feel the poor old photographer is on a ‘hiding to nothing’. Essentially that old saying means it will never be right! Portraits for us Gen X’s is a funny thing. We are all self conscious and self effacing. For the current generations a selfie is just a standard part of life and no big deal.

I made this self portrait back in 2012 whilst doing some night time photography of stars and all the while thinking deeply about the universe and my place in it. I was alone on a beach in the middle of the night whilst the moon started to rise. I set my camera up on a tripod and with a long exposure used a torch to illuminate myself.
