Purpose
When working on a new collection of images I question why am I doing this? Is there a result I’m looking to achieve? Is it pointless, is this a hobby, is it just for me, am I trying to impress a certain audience, what am I going to do with it?
The more questions I ask the more I feel torn between continuing and doing something else like watch TV where I don’t have to ask these questions.
Stoic philosophy teaches an idea whereby the only gauge to be lead by, is the internal one we all have. Am I living up to my own set of virtues that make me who I am? Society however leads us to believe that for it to be worthwhile there must be some trophy or outcome that comes back your way. It can be hard to strike that balance.
The work below I made back in 2017. It has just sat on my hard drive. Only my eyes have seen it. It seems the purpose was in the doing itself, but if a tree falls in a forest and nobody is there to hear it did it ever happen? Now that this image is out in the world does it make it any more real?
